Yvonne Carmichael - Retail Aesthetics
Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2013 12-6pm
Opening cocktail soiree Friday 20 September 7-9pm
38b Peckham Rye, London
Retail Aesthetics included Yvonne's latest video The Ballad of the Rawson Sisters. Shot in a vacant retail unit in Bradford, the video articulates an abstracted folk tale of the fate of a group of women who spent their working and recreational lives in retail. Works from two photographic series were shown alongside; Ladies of Leisure, portraits of women mimicking furniture from the Asda Outdoor Living catalogue and Poundland is a Girl’s Best Friend, utilitarian objects arranged according to the rules of high-end retail visual merchandising and referencing ‘golden-era’ Hollywood musicals.
The exhibition was part of PAMI (Peckham Artist Moving Image Festival), a four-day programme of artists’ moving image which took place in various locations across Peckham 19-22 September 2013.
Yvonne is an artist and curator who also works collaboratively as part of artist collective Black Dogs. In her individual practice she uses performance video and photography to playfully critique behaviours, aesthetics and the politics of representation in contemporary culture.
