Tour Thanks, 2013 Year of the Tank, 90's Covers

We returned from our short-but-sweetest run of gigs on Monday. A massive thanks to peeps at Brew Dog Newcastle and Jade for putting us up in her school; Rose and people at Delius Arts and Cultural Centre in Bradford; Stef, Dan, Ed, Lisa and the lads at Spatchcock in London; and all the Audacious Art Experimentalists in Sheffield. We had a total blast.

We also played with some great bands that you should check out; One Man Dance Team from High Wycombe, Rivals from Sunderland, The Sassys from London and, last but not least, Wooderson from Sheffield.

It was really ace to play to animated crowds and in such a diverse range of spaces. The DIY scene in the UK has never been better to us!

2013 will mark 10 years of That Fucking Tank, a band that we formed as a joke for a one-off gig in August 2003. To celebrate we've got plans to do a best of/live record with lots of treats and a tour in August time. Aside from that we'll be taking it easy but you can catch us at British Wildlife Festival on March 1st at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds.

One last chance to catch Andy and James on stage together will be at No Hands club night at 1 in 12 Club, Bradford 28th December, at which we'll be performing a selection of 90's alternative rock covers by Nirvana, Green Day, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine and others along with Ben Holden (Dolphins/Stalking Horse) and Patrick Dowson (Nope/Garfunkle and Simon).

Have a great festive period and see you in the new tanking year.

Tour Thanks. TFT Release. Last gigs of 2011.

First of all a massive thanks to everyone who helped out on our recent Euro tour, either by promoting gigs, providing hospitality, attending the gigs, buying our shite or just being generally helpful. It was a consistently ace tour with too many highlights to mention so our gratitude to everyone who helped make it happen. Large props to Chris and Patrick in Brighton, Mat in Mons, Antonia in Freiburg, Luca in Milan, Gio in Bologna, Rok in Ljubljiana, Tom and Lucas in Prague, Ciikaal in Ceske Budejovice, Matthias in Halle, Sven in Antwerp, Mark in Canterbury and to everyone else we met along the way. Also special mention to tour hero Stef Ketteringham for not only eating up the substantial miles in his van and making it look easy but also for playing amazing sets night after night as Guns or Knives.

The tour was in support of the vinyl release of our new album TFT and we're happy to say we shifted a fair whack so hope the little flat lads help spread the tank-word far and wide. Adding much support to this cause is the Gringo Records release of the CD and digital versions of the album. You can purchase it now at the Gringo shop. Euro Tour Announcement

That Fucking Tank + Guns or Knives European Tour 2011

Bradford-based instrumental noise-rock duo That Fucking Tank are doing a quick flash around Europe and the UK to play tracks from their new album TFT.

The album sees Tank covering broad musical ground including UK hardcore, ambient and acid house influenced tunes amongst the riffs and grooves that have become a staple of their sets. Come see such sonic delights delivered at volume and in the flesh. At these gigs, you will be able to purchase the seriously limited vinyl release of TFT prior to its official CD release early next year.

New Album TFT ready for Preorder

As threatened Obscene Baby Auction Records is resurrected! Their first release of the decade is the new album by That Fucking Tank, TFT, of which they will be releasing the initial run on vinyl.

Gringo Records will be taking care of the official and mainstream shop release later in the year.

Go to OBA bandcamp page where you can also have a sneaky listen if you want to hear it before buying.

That Fucking Tank - TFT

Format: 12-inch vinyl (first 100 white vinyl)

Release date: December 2011

Run: 300 copies

Notes: TFT is the third album by Bradford-based instrumental two-piece That Fucking Tank, following 2009’s Tanknology; a record that became a favourite amongst the DIY and noise-rock underground in UK and Europe. TFT sees Andy and James deliver a similarly substantial amount of riffs, hooks and grooves via their chosen tools of baritone guitar (played through and switched between multiple guitar and bass amplifiers) and drums (stripped to the bare essentials i.e without toms) but with a much-expanded palette in terms of style, influence and mood.

TFT acts as a concept album of sorts. Confidently in control of their instruments and having honed the sound that has secured their reputation as one of the UK’s most invigorating live acts, Tank are able to revisit and pull together influences that reflect both their broad taste and the fact that they have been playing together in one form or another since the age of eleven. Recorded in the year when these two friends reached thirty, TFT is a musical review of the journey they have embarked on for the last twenty years.

Rob Whiteley is back at the helm as engineer, having now worked with Andy and James for close to ten years. This sustained relationship has led him to develop a unique recording technique that captures the rawness and energy of Tank’s performances (tracks are performed live in the studio with little or no overdubs) whilst creating layers of sound that translate the volume of a Tank gig as closely as possible. The result is an album of unprecedented depth and colour, for a ‘noise-rock’ duo at least, that moves across different spaces and atmospheres whilst retaining a consistency that represents the ‘minimal/maximal’ approach of the band well.

In keeping with the autobiographical nature of the album Andy and James have decided to release the initial pressing of this record through their resurrected label Obscene Baby Auction; putting the DIY ethics of the band into practice. A final important nod comes in the form of the packaging and liner notes that consciously echo Crass. Although it may be difficult for first-time listeners to make links between Tank and the anarcho-punk scene stylistically or aesthetically, an ethical and political affinity exists; Tank do their best to demonstrate that good music need not be the product of a careerist or cynically professional approach - it can just as likely come from friends having a good time together.

Tracklisting:

1. TFT // 2. Wonderful World Of // 3. Car On Fire // 4. Lomond // 5. Nailbomb //
6. NWONWOBHM // 7. Acid Jam // 8. D8 // 9. Threads // 10. End (Of Wonderful World)

We have sold out of Baby Auction mailorders but you can still buy vinyl versions from Norman Records and read a bloody nice review HERE.

Hey Tankers;

Here's a sample track from our new album 'TFT'. It's the title track, which means it's also called 'TFT'. TFT is an acronym of That Fucking Tank. Hence this our most biographical song to date. Enjoy!

The album will be out before the year is up - watch this space!

New Album Developing

Just a quick update to let you know that we met what looked like a formidable challenge and manage to both write (the majority of) and record (all of) our new album in a fortnight. In our opinion it's sounding pretty rocking. Now is the hopefully not-too-slow-and-painful process of mixing, mastering, pulling together the artwork and liner notes so it comes out fresh and still kicking.

We've decided to release the initial pressing of this album ourselves through our ten-year old label 'Obscene Baby Auction'. If you've not come across OBA then please familiarise yourself by following this link www.obscenebabyauction.co.uk where you can listen to and download the whole back catalogue including out-of-print Tank treats.

We'll release more details on the album and how to pre-order in due course but for now watch this space. Also, we're planning to do some Euro-touring when the album comes out so if you want us to come and play in your place then please get in touch via landsandbody@yahoo.com. Cheers muchly.

New Record

Hi all. Just a quick note to say that after what feels like an age the eagerly awaited split 10" featuring our new(ish) song NWONWOBH will see the light of day on July 18th. There's only 300 vinyl copies available so head on over to www.brewrecords.net to get yours. On the 10-inch are also tracks by Shield Your Eyes, Kong and Castrovalva. Andy has made a video for the song that will see its debut on Monday 20th June. Watch this space.

Plans are also coming together for our recording of something that could well make up a third album assuming it doesn't go rubbish. All being well we'll put another full-length out by Autumn with plans for Euro touring in November. Please get in touch if you want us to come to your country. Especially if it's warm. Email landsandbody@yahoo.com.

Tour Thankings

We're back off our tour-hols with Shield Your Eyes and happy to say a safe and enjoyable time was had by all. Grazies to Dan and Carly in Sunderland, Nora, Claire and Joel in Edinburgh, Chris Winning Sperm for graciously putting us up in Glasgow and Andy Brown for organising a rocking gig and also to Giuseppe and Ron at The Countesse of Rosse, Saltaire for providing an excellent venue for a final banger.

Also big thanks to the butchers in Drymen and the makers of disposable barbecues. We had a totally amazing time camping in Loch Lomond and fending for ourselves in the wild despite the hoards of aggro-lads who threaten to jeopardise Scotland's pretty ace legal acceptance of Wild Camping. Next time we hit Scotland we hope to do a bit more if the same but further north so if you live in a town or village no matter how remote and have a plug socket or two then please get in touch.

Our next gigs look like this:

May
Monday 30th - Brudenell Social Club w/ Thee Oh Sees

July
Friday 15th - Out Of Spite Festival, Leeds.

August
Friday 12th - Beacons Festival, Skipton.
Saturday 13th - Leave Me Here Festival, County Durham

Last, Andy and James are working on a live soundtrack for an experimental theatre production that will take place in Leeds, Nottingham and London in May. See http://www.bentarchitect.co.uk/archives/date/2011/03 for details; should be molto interessante.

That Fucking Tank and Shield Your Eyes Scottish Micro-Tour April 2011

This April two of the UKs most tour-loving underground rock acts hit the road in attempt to go very North. Lord only knows how That Fucking Tank’s normally real-ale influenced instrumental high-octane riff mash-ups will be enhanced by fine whiskey consumption, whilst Shield Your Eyes promise to further negotiate the under-explored pathways laid by British progressive blues bands of the 1960s and 70s in a manner that keeps noise-rock loving hipsters grinning like mentalists.

The trip will also act as a nostalgic homeward journey for Andy (guitarist in Tank and bass player for this tour in Shield ‘Em) who was born in the Highlands and is looking forward to meeting up with his childhood friend who believed himself to be a dog.

Tour Thanks

We’re back off our short tour now and happy to say it was a top-ranking UK trip if ever there was one. Big buggering thanks and a raised glass of real-ale to Nash in Preston, Sam, Wooderson and the Sheffield lads, Henry and MAC in Brighton, Micheal and the incredible Star and Shadow cinema in Newcastle, Christian and The Cow dudes in Cambridge and Wolves Festers.

We experienced some hyper-encouraging practical applications of the DIY ethos on this tour – it’s a genuine pleasure and privilege for us to be part of a community of music makers and lovers that are creating working alternatives to the culture of money-making, self-advancement and fashion-based competition that characterises ‘the industry’. Thanks for continuing to give us something to believe in!

Last but in no way least, much love and gratitude to Colorful Mountain and Buzz Aldrin for joining us on the tour and being a source of inspiration and entertainment musically and personally. If you didn’t catch them play then they come very recommended; hopefully it won’t be long before they return to our scabby shores.

In other news, we have some sporadic gigs a’happening over the coming months with the first instalment of our Dad-to-Dad tour (Scotland) currently being booked for late April. More news on that as it develops. Also the eagle-eared of you may have noticed we have a couple of new tunes in our set which we hope to be the preliminary rumblings of some new record of a sort.

Cheers for now and continue to be ottimo to one another.

New Year Slick Vid

Happy New Year Tankers. James and I have had a cracking break eating mince and throwing snow down the drain. We even started thinking about writing some new songs but they are yet to get passed the ideas stage at the moment. Needless to say, however, they are right rockers.

We have a few gigs sliding down the pipe that will splurge on to this screen soon. For now though please take a few minutes of your lives to enjoy JakOMat's quite breathtaking and wholly self-funded video for our disco-hit, Mr Blood.

That Fucking Tank: 'Mr Blood' from JakoMat on Vimeo.

If you like what you see then please get in touch with Matt and Jack and let them know! It took a lot of blood, sweat and babies to make.

That's pretty much all for now. If you fancy seeing some Tank related shenanigans in January then why not come along to see Nope and In Zaire play in a town near you.? Details follow...

This January warm up your cold winter heart and dispel the post-festive blues with a dose of tribal psychedelic dance drone from two groups from differing countries and climes.

In Zaire come from Sunny Italy via Berlin. You may recognise a couple of members from being excellent Lightning Bolty noise-rockers GI Joe. In this guise they explore further the afrobeat trance-party territory hinted at in their two-piece form with an ex...tended line up of layered voodoo rhythm percussiveness, wacked-out noise, and spiritual chantish vocals. Party lads party hard.
http://www.myspace.com/inzaire

Nope are a related beast emerging from the bleaker landscapes of Yorkshire’s thread-towns, moors and valleys. Psychedlic washes of synths provide the backdrop for pounding unrelinquishing note repetition and thump-drumming that may call to mind a beefed up Neu! and other Krautrockers. The members CVs include big-noise duos That Fucking Tank and Mucky Sailor. Best enjoyed dancing after a fat chongo.

Both bands will also be flogging a self-released tour only tape. See them in following places at the following times:

Wednesday 12th – The Croft, Bristol (front room)
Thursday 13th – The Red House, Sheffield

Sunday 16th – Metro, Milton Keynes (early show)

Thanks and one more

Massive gushes of thank-juice to all those who came out and saw us play on our September part-timers tour. Via thorough statistical analyses James and I arrived at the decision that they were some of the best UK gigs we have played! Fancy that. If you have any photos, videos, feedback, comments or criticisms that you would like to send our way then please email to landsandbody@yahoo.com.

Even greater globs of gratitude spurted in the direction of Dot-Dot-Dash in Reading, Hired Geeks in London, Not Shy of the DIY in Sheffield, Ellis of Wingwalker in Liverpool, Adam British Wildlife in the Lakes, This Dirty Basement and No Hands in Bradford, Sian Hayward in Manchester, and Richard Amundsen and the Split Fest organisers in Sunderland. We're happy to be able to say that touring the UK without the use of money-hungry middle-men and dealing with people who are doing the whole thing for love not money, and in their spare-time, is still a viable and most rewarding experience. It's only possible thanks to the generous energies of those involved so cheers tons.

As for future plans - we're playing one more gig that might be considered an afterword to the tour. That happens this Saturday as part of the Play Patterns festival and is at The(/Josephs) Well in Leeds. Then aside from a small spattering of dates in November and December (see below) we're going to be writing some new stuff, recording in office spaces and potentially even doing a self-released 7-inch through our resuscitated Obscene Baby Auction label.

Also we've got a split 10-inch coming out on Brew records in December with other tasty bands including Kong and Shield Your Eyes details of which will follow.

Sunday 5th - Sheffield, The Red House

Some people that like Tank and are good at drawing and computers and that have incredibly generously made tour posters for this momentous occasion. Big thanks to Julian Dicken of Broken Face Design for his gorey Black Metal-font effort and also to Paul of www.halftonesandheadphones.com for his Airfix porn. Be dazzled and amazed by their contributions below.

We will also be playing our new ditty 'NWONWOBH' at these gigs so bring your leather studded wrist bands and fingerless gloves for enhanced fist pumping. You may be interested to know that we have recorded the rocker ourselves at Lumen offices in Holbeck, Leeds for a split 10-inch on Brew records ETA December 2010. Here's a picture of the glamorous act of recording:

That's pretty much all the news. Hope to see you down the front for some serious ear buggering.

New Website, New Song and Split

I am also trying to collate an archive of all our past gigs so if you have any posters, flyers or dates then send an email to landsandbody@yahoo.com.

We are currently writing and plan to record a new song provisionally entitled 'New Wave of New Wave of British Heavy Metal' for a forthcoming split with mint bands on Brew records for release later this year. Also we have a few gigs coming up in September so see below or check out the 'Upcoming gigs' section for that.

It's the just same old show, on my radio
Last week we did an interview on Leeds Student Radio. Big thanks to James Travis the astro-physical DJ. You can download the podcast from the James' show here. It contains some great laughs and some records being chosen by us.

We've also been working on a remix of a tune by Elso (a Leeds DJ/producer type) which will be released in the next week or so on the front of Leeds Guide Magazine. Full details to follow and I will whack the tune up for download when interest in the magazine version has died out!

Come and see us play Santiago's in Leeds on the 20th of November, it should be a larf.

Tourage UK
Now we have returned from our tour of two halves of the UK it is time to extend a warm thanks to all those who helped organise the gigs, put us up, fed us, watched us play and talked to us afterwards. We had an exceedingly excellent time; the UK really came up trumps with some Summery weather and we took in some exotic sites in pockets of England we have never visited – Hell Fire Caves in west Wycombe and ‘frog’ pub being particular highlights.

So, in no particularly strict order cheers to;

Michael Matthews of Sunderland and We Be The Echo of San Francisco

Poor Girl Noise Toms and lads in Oxford

Double Dot Dash girls and boys in Reading, Toddlers and The Hobgoblin pub

Mike Diver and Clash music Londoners

The Camden Barfly, particularly Adam and John for being incredibly accommodating of our jam.

Toby in Brighton and the pier arcade for stocking Cadillacs and Dinosaurs

Don McClean and the Bletchley massive for a stonking night. Chops!

We were pleasantly surprised and humbled by the turnouts and the kind reception we received. Thanks to everyone that came along. Many promoters noted that it wasn’t their regular crowd which means we’re either drawing a new set of people along to DIY gigs in the UK, or that we’re so old that our audience is made up out of people, like us, who haven’t been to gigs in ages!

It was strangely pleasant to hear people say to us; “It’s really good that your still going’. I’ve never really thought of Tank as a long-running band, let alone an institution, but I guess we’re hitting our 5th or 6th year soon and it’ll soon be time to start writing some power ballads. Catch us while we’re still rocking hard.

I guess another reason people might seem surprised that we’re still going at it is because a lot of bands ride some kind of wave of hype that launches them into the stratosphere or they just stop and try again with something different. The ‘buzz’ around Tank – which people tell me about but I’ve never experienced first hand – seems instead to be like some kind of almost imperceptible constant hum like tinnitus. I hope people appreciate the way we keep on doing our thing, trundelling along, progressing slowly into newer territories. I’ve always had more respect for bands that play the long game. DIY isn’t a stepping-stone, it’s a network that should be pushed, prodded and expanded into new places. We very much look forward to rolling into some new places on our next trip out. Please feed us something hot, our aging bodies need it.

Summer Holiday

We are doing some gigs in England, as August is the only month of the year when it is warm enough to do so (in theory). We are also playing Moorfest on August 8th. Moorfest is in a field somewhere between Skipton and Leeds.
